Manistee city council takes steps to allow marijuana grow facilities in city.

MANISTEE — The Manistee City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to pass an ordinance that will allow marijuana growing facilities to operate in the city, according to

“Our proposed police power ordinance would allow for a medical marijuana grow facility, a processing facility, a transporter and a safety compliance,” said Thad Taylor, Manistee city manager. “The one license we would not allow by ordinance would be a provisioning center.”

One location for a possible grow operation would be in the old Manistee Iron Works building on River Street. That proposed development plan would also have mixed-use, with a possible convention center, hotel and retail use.

“It would completely redevelop that site. It’s a historical site, it’s on the river and right along the railroad tracks,” Taylor said, adding that the operations could bring more job opportunities.

“It’s exciting to bring maybe 40 to 80 jobs into the community that are well-paying jobs,” Taylor explained.

The ordinance would also allow a second company to operate in an industrial park off Washington Street.

There is another zoning ordinance that will need the council’s approval before any plan goes forward.

If the ordinances are passed the grow operations still need proper licenses from the State of Michigan.
