VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College will be hosting College for Kids 2017, July 31- August 4.

The five-day session is a hands-on opportunity to explore higher education through arts, sciences, communications and recreation in a day-camp atmosphere on the college campus and features 20 plus action-packed learning adventures designed for motivated learners grades 4 through 8.

A new addition this year is College for Kids: Next Gen which is designed to engage students entering grades 9-12 in a variety of hands-on learning and recreational activities throughout the same week.

“Both programs expose students to potential careers, expand their knowledge, and hands-on learning under the guidance of experienced educators,” said Crystal Young, Director of the Business Opportunity Center.

“While they’re learning, playing and developing friendships, they’re also getting a taste of campus life. The young students are all over campus, in college classrooms where they may attend classes someday, getting experience of how a college works through its equipment and technology,’ she added.

Some of the courses and activities include electronics, Zentangle art, acting, arts and crafts, pond ecology, wilderness survival, build a business, introduction to philosophy, game programming, debate, a variety of recreational activities, and more.

Full-day, week-long participants receive two, three-hour courses, and a College for Kids t-shirt for $165.  Half-day week-long participants receive one, three- hour course, and a t-shirt for $90. Some scholarships are available by contacting Cara Mitchell, or visiting the college’s tent at upcoming Friday Night Live events.

Students should bring a sack lunch or may purchase, in advance, lunch at the Beans & Bread café from a pre-established menu. To view the menu, visit the college web site and click on College for Kids.

To accommodate the schedule of working parents, younger students may be dropped off at the Tech Center at 8:30 a.m. and should be picked up at the same location no later than 4 p.m.

Registration for College for Kids starts July 11, and early registration is suggested as most courses are limited to 15 participants.
