PLEASANTON TOWNSHIP — A 44-year-old Onekama man was arrested on May 15 by State, Sheriffs, Chiefs Enforcement Narcotics Team (SSCENT) for several methamphetamine related charges. Terry Lee Welch, Jr. was arraigned on Wednesday, May 17 in 85th District Court on felony charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, delivery of morphine, and soliciting another to obtain ephedrine. Welch faces up to 40 years in prison; he is also a repeat offender.

In the fall of 2016 detectives from SSCENT initiated an investigation into Welch and learned he was allegedly involved in manufacturing methamphetamine around the Manistee County area. On May 15 detectives executed a search warrant in the 9500 block of Norconk Road. Several items used in the production of meth were located inside the home.

The production of methamphetamine involves the use of hazardous materials and as a result requires specially trained technicians to clean up the site, according to Michigan State Police Lt. Andrew Ambrose, commander of SSCENT. Members of the MSP Methamphetamine Enforcement Team responded to the scene and dismantled the laboratory and removed the hazardous materials from the residence.

SSCENT detectives were assisted by deputies from Manistee County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from Michigan State Police Cadillac Post.
