Police continue search for driver who fled fatal crash.

MANISTEE TOWNSHIP — The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office continues the search for a driver who fled the scene of a fatal car crash Wednesday evening, March 29, on US 31 near Big Al’s Pizza.

Dean Horaszewski, 49, of Manistee, died in the two-car crash, and a 24-year-old Onekama man and his 4-year-old received minor injuries. Horaszewski was pronounced dead at the scene,

The sheriff’s office is actively searching for the fleeing driver who was driving a tan- or gold-colored SUV with a loud exhaust.

“Some new information has developed as we continue to explore leads attempting to identify the unknown driver and vehicle that left the scene of a person injury accident on Wednesday, March 29, around 9 p.m.,” said Manistee County Sheriff John O’Hagan Friday. The sheriff continues to ask for the public’s help in locating the fleeing driver.

“We have had a witness report a possible tan or gold color (SUV), and more recently had a description of silver color as well. The vehicle has a loud exhaust,” O’Hagan said.

“We encourage anyone with any information to call us at 231-723-8393 as we continue to investigate this accident,” the sheriff said.

“Preliminary investigation shows an unknown vehicle/driver pulled out of Big Al’s parking lot to head south on US 31,” O’Hagan stated. “In doing so, the unknown driver occupied the northbound lane. The vehicle’s driver immediately turned back into Big Al’s parking lot via a second entrance.

“That action of the unknown vehicle/driver caused the northbound driver, a 49-year-old Manistee native, to try and avoid a collision. The driver maneuvered his 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass around the unknown vehicle; however, crossed the path of an oncoming 1999 Chevrolet Suburban that was southbound on US 31 driven by a 24-year-old male from Onekama.”
