MANISTEE TOWNSHIP– The 49-year-old Manistee man who died in a two-car crash Wednesday evening, March 29, on US 31 near Big Al’s Pizza has been identified as Dean Horaszewski, according to Manistee County Sheriff John O’Hagan.

The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office continues its search for a driver who fled the scene of the tragic crash. The person was driving a tan- or gold-colored SUV with a loud exhaust.

“We are investigating each and every tip we have received thus far,” said O’Hagan. The sheriff continues to ask for the public’s help in locating the fleeing driver.

Horaszewski was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 24-year-old Onekama man and and his 4-year-old son were treated and released at West Shore Medical Center for minor injuries.

“On Wednesday evening, March 29, 2017, just before 9 p.m., a two-vehicle crash occurred on US 31 near Hahn Road in Manistee Township,” O’Hagan stated in a press release issued Thursday morning. “Preliminary investigation shows an unknown vehicle/driver pulled out of Big Al’s parking lot to head south on US 31. In doing so, the unknown driver occupied the northbound lane. The vehicle’s driver immediately turned back into Big Al’s parking lot via a second entrance,” the sheriff states.

“That action of the unknown vehicle/driver caused the northbound driver, a 49-year-old Manistee native, to try and avoid a collision. The driver maneuvered his 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass around the unknown vehicle; however, crossed the path of an oncoming 1999 Chevrolet Suburban that was southbound on US 31 driven by a 24-year-old male from Onekama.

Anyone who has any information about the crash or the unknown vehicle/driver is urged to call sheriff’s office at 231-723-8393 or Central Dispatch at 723-6241.”
